A few weeks ago I wrote THIS post about embracing the marketing/promotional opportunities that the world throws at you. These opportunities can include everything from riding the wave of a hit movie/song, piggybacking natural disasters, responding to current events or utilizing holidays (real and ‘created’). Well today I’m going to throw one of those opportunities in front of you (so don’t say the flying pig never did anything for ya
)
Hopefully after reading my article about FourSquare and reading up on the resources I pointed you to, you have started utilizing it in your marketing campaigns. It’s true that FourSquare is bigger in some cities than others. If it isn’t that big in your city, that should be even more motivation for you to be a trendsetter and take advantage of the opportunity to make it big for you! (here again folks, it is all about seeing opportunities and taking advantage of them in real time).
There is a movement underfoot to make April 16th FourSquare day…why you may ask…well for the non-nerds among you 4/16 is four and four squared. Clever huh? I wish I could take credit, but the fabulous idea was developed by my favorite Optometrist, Social Media Guru and Flying Pig Guest Blogger, Dr. Nate Bonilla-Warford.
So, of course the big question is why can this be helpful for your business?
This is a day where a larger percentage of people are going to be using FourSquare. You will get a combination of current, frequent users, occasional users, and new users who are just learning about foursquare and wanting to be part of the fun on this day. Here is a captive audience of people just waiting to find places to check in and take advantage of the many promotions that businesses will be offering in honor of this day!
Let’s call these foursquare users…”customers waiting to happen” (CWH). Able and willing people just waiting for you to give them the motivation to become your customer. This is practically a small business owners eutopia! All that is required on your part is to make sure you are signed up as a FourSquare Business (you can do so here), make sure you have a pretty awesome promotion available to motivate the CWH’s to come to your business and then, when they do come, show ‘em what you’ve got.
Follow these simple steps and you can change these CWH to CCs (current customers) and if you do your job well enough, LTCs (long-term customers)!!!!
Excited yet?
Here are some actions steps to get you started
1) Sign Up on FourSquare (if you aren’t already)
2) Join the FourSquare Day Fan Page on Facebook
3) Promote your participation on Twitter (if you are an active twitter user) with the hashtag #4sqday
4) Ask Questions! If you are new to this and want to take advantage of this opportunity but a bit overwhelmed by it all, feel free to email me, leave a comment below or on the FourSquare fan page
5) Spread the word! The more people involved the more fun this will be and the better for your business!
Ready. Set. Go! Let’s launch this Pig and make it Fly!

This is great, Laura! I am glad that you love the idea! Isn’t it fun to use social media for projects that are larger than any one person or business?
I hope you get some great feedback!
