What do you do in 10 Words or Less

Generally you have less than 30 seconds to tell a new acquaintance what it is you do? Who your business serves and why they should care. Do you have your sound bite ready? You must be pithy, on point, compelling and directed, otherwise you’ll lose your audience and lose an opportunity to spread the message of your business.

So let’s practice: What do you do? Please comment below!

  1. Inspire people to do the things that inspire them

    • Wow! That is an awesome mission statement Scott…you just set the bar pretty high for those that will follow you. I like this statement for several reasons

      a) In its essence is inspirational (which is sort of the point, eh?
      b) It makes the listener want to know more….thus when you elaborate (or even better when the ask, ‘please tell me more’) you aren’t selling, you are simply responding to their request and teaching them more about your service

      Perfection!

      • hey thanks! I think it’s at the core of everything. With a statement like that, you can do anything. It leads to the belief that people can pursue their dreams, or passions and weaken the magnetic pull of the status quo.

I never realized the 2nd point you made. But it makes perfect sense and why it’s important to not be defined by the product you make.

  5. A haven for lingerie lovers of every nation and persuasion!

  6. Such a good exercise. I have a 10 word description, but it doesn’t have the punch or clarity for a mainstream audience … that’s what I need to work on. Will come back when I’m ready to reveal!

  7. empower women to excavate their passions and live with purpose

hard to get it in ten words, but great exercise. i really do want to help women. help women rediscover their gifts, their passions, their dreams…the ones they set aside or buried for the first few decades of their lives. i want to help them live the next forty plus years of their lives fulfilled and empowered as their authentic selves. see, told you, very hard to put into ten words! thanks for the exercise!

  8. I run a media and education company.

  9. I tell stories

I work in PR, and I tell the story of my client

  10. I actually have been working on this very excercise.

I create products that help people overcome hurdles.

    • Tom,

If you don’t mind, I thought to tweak this statement (especially since you mentioned working on it). What if you changed it to this:

I get up everyday to help people overcome life’s hurdles.

You could remove “life’s” but still.

I like this more than “I create products” because creating products seems so lifeless. Using “I get up everyday to..” actually states that why you get out of bed everyday. Because this exercises was only to use 10 words, it’s tough and why I didn’t use the getting out of bed thing. If you were to try and change this exercise to 140 characters or less it would be easier.

For instance you probably do much more than just create products to help the people overcome obstacles. But using the getting out of bed thing gives the impression, atleast to me, that this is your mission in life, the reason you get up and get excited about your day.

      Just my 2 cents

      Scott
